You count Walmart trucks to pass the time: We changed Slug Bug to Slug Walmart trucks on the way from Seattle to Weed to Barstow -- way more of those than VW bugs! In eastern Arizona we convinced ourselves that asphalt patches and cows -- I'm not kidding -- were oncoming cars since it had been so long since we'd seen one.
It takes over 10 hours to drive 360+ miles from Flagstaff to Santa Fe: We followed road signs to Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park and enjoyed and learned so much at both. High winds kept us off the crater rim. It's fun to go where the spirit takes you!
You plan your day around elementary school drop-off and pick-up times: So much fun in Flagstaff with the Whites. When the girls were in school we climbed to the top of Mount Elden, 2.5 miles one way to 9050 feet elevation. The next day Daisy the perfect dog accompanied Larry on an 8-mile hike to Fisher Point. It's literally out the White's front door! Together we played, painted nails, ate out, watched American Idol and went to Flagstaff's Friday Night Art Walk.
Art Walk features lots of young people and families: Unlike our recent Third Thursday in Tacoma at TAM to see the Norman Rockwell exhibit which featured crowds of geezers like us wanting free admission to see nostalgic paintings.
You drink your lunch: Actually, it was the meal between breakfast and lunch. After a several mile stroll around Santa Fe this quiet Sunday morning to see historic buildings and galleries, all of which were closed, we went to Kakawa Chocolate House. The specialty is chocolate drinks, many from ancient Aztec and Mayan recipes. The samples got my head to throbbing so had a lighter drink that was sinfully thick, dark, rich and spectacular. Larry just smiled when I licked the inside of the ridiculously narrow, small cup. That was followed by a New Mexico cuisine lunch at the Rancho de Chamayo Restaurante just off the High Road drive between Santa Fe and Taos. Interesting high mountain scenery. At 7500 feet the mountains are blanketed with pine trees. At home it would be above timberline.
Sounds like you have had a lot of fun already, and sun to go out in!!! Here we're getting desperate and thinking of doing sun dances and seeing if that helps the rain to stop for a longer time! Looking forward to next input from you!
