Grand, Historic and Stately

Charleston offers pre-Revolutionary War, Civil War, antebellum South and modern treats. We walked and toured the historic district to see some of the oldest buildings and incredible homes in the US, took a boat out to Fort Sumter to learn more about the first shot fired in the Civil War and sampled Charleston cuisine at both ends of the spectrum. The bottom end was the most fun. We drove nearly to Folly Island and ate at Bowens Island Restaurant, a down and dirty seafood dive at the end of a dirt road. We went with fried and boiled shrimp with our first hush puppies. This very basic restaurant won a James Beard award and when we left there were 50-60 people waiting to order from a single person.
