Southwest Texas out of Hobbs: flat, barren and ugly. Swirling dirt blown by very high winds covered the highway so we couldn't see it at times. Tumbleweeds hitting the Grammy Van! Sad little towns out of the movie Cars. And 90 degrees by 10:30 a.m. And then we went through a town called Eden. Texans are an interesting bunch!
In the afternoon as we approached central Texas and the Hill Country the landscape changed and it was very pretty: rolling hills, lots of cottonwood trees but unfortunately no wild flowers. It's the season but last fall's drought did them in. Visited Fredericksburg, which was a fun town with lots of shops and fudge samples.
Yelp led us to the Alamo Springs Cafe about 14 miles outside of Fredericksburg in the middle of absolutely nothing. Several magazines rated it as the best or in the top three burger places in Texas. Definitely lived up to the hype even if the restaurant name isn't on the rundown building.
Staying at the New Braunfels Worldmark -- the nicest one we've ever stayed in as far as the unit goes. Great location between Austin and San Antonio with lots of rivers and lakes plus the rolling hills.
