Pinch me: we're in New Orleans and lucked into the French Quarter Festival, considered a mid-sized festival with mostly local bands (dozens) for the locals. We listened to five or six groups, people were dancing in the streets and it couldn't have been better! One group of five had a girl about 8-9 years old as the drummer and she was great. An older woman was the lead -- played the clarinet and sang Mac the Knife in Creole. It was amazing.
During our morning drive to NO we visited Oak Alley Plantation with its 28 evenly-spaced in two rows 300 year-old oak trees welcoming you. After the tour Larry had a mint julep on the veranda. That was two shots of bourbon at 11 a.m.!
Dinner at the Crescent City Brewery brought something new to the table, at least on this trip. Vegetables. We know we aren't eating at high end places but the only vegetables we've seen on a menu were corn-on-the-cob smothered in butter and creamed corn, neither of which really qualifies as a vegetable. So when a side salad and three yummy asparagus spears accompanied my crab au gratin (rich and sinful as it could be) I was in heaven!
