And Alabama. And Florida. Four states in one day, counting starting out in Louisiana. The Welcome Centers are wonderful -- beautiful grounds and buildings, smiling, helpful people and lots of good info. Too bad we don't have any in Washington or Oregon!
Didn't expect Mississippi to be so ... civilized. Good freeways, beautiful trees lining them and down the broad middle space. Drove along the Redneck Riviera at Gulf Port and Biloxi. They had tremendous damage from Hurricane Katrina and are restoring the beach and rebuilding. Looked very nice. We only saw a small portion of Mississippi but are hoping to add the Natchez Trace from Memphis to Natchez later in the trip.
We had a soul food lunch in the historic district of Mobile, Alabama. I didn't know you could batter and deep fry a pork chop. Fried pork chop was the daily special and you could add two sides. I chose collard greens and fruit; Larry had collard greens and mac and cheese. This was all in addition to the mashed potatoes and gravy and cornbread that came with the meal. Mobile is similar in size to Tacoma and looked like a nice city. Some interesting downtown high rise buildings.
We're now in Destin, Florida, for two nights. Amazing white sand beaches and Caribbean turquoise water. Hope to enjoy some relaxing on the beach tomorrow.
