We're getting real familiar with I-40: back to Nashville this morning. Cool but sunny.
Decided to up the star count on Hotwire tonight so we are in a very fancy Sheraton between the airport and Opryland. Don't know if we've stayed in a place like this since we were going to conventions and someone else was paying. But for $58 (plus taxes) it's not really a splurge. Of course, you don't get a hot breakfast like the Comfort Inn, but it will do.
Ran errands and then gussied up for the Grand Ole Opry. Went two hours early so we could walk around the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and we needed it. It's in the same class as fancy Disneyland hotels; four huge sections with restaurants, shops, a half-mile meandering waterway you can take a boat ride in and incredible plantings. The Conservatory area was beautiful, maybe 4-5 stories high with rooms overlooking it. The balconies all had wrought-iron railings and chairs. The plantings were amazing. There was an enormous convention center attached to the hotel and it was a short walk to the Grand Ole Opry. It's hard to believe that one year ago it was flooded with up to 10 feet of water.
The Opry is a radio show so you had all the trappings - announcer, host, studio musicians, guest musicians wating in the wings, etc. We heard old-timers, ancient-timer (Little Jimmy Dickens, 90 years old), a newcomer who hit it big this year (he was amazing) and a fellow who appeared to be about 50 and had been at it for 30 years and was still hoping to make it (we really liked him). No big stars but it was such an experience that we loved it.
